Driving and manners

We always hire a car when we visit Cyprus and always follow the same manners as UK when someone lets you out by giving wave or nod but never had this returned. Is it something that is not expected in Cyprus as my husband stopped doing this and it did,nt feel right

THe people whom drive in England are the better drivers when compared to Cypriot drivers.

I try to be courteous as much as I can when I am driving around. Sometimes when they don%26#39;t give me a nod or a wave, I just don%26#39;t bother being irritated with them. I used to. Then I gave up. Now I think that I%26#39;m teaching them good manners.

People in Cyprus, especially the guys, like to think that they are in the Formula 1 or the Cyprus Rally. Sadly, this results in many road deaths.

When you visit Cyprus next time, just try to be as courteous as much as you can. Cyprus governement bodies say that they will introduce more vigilant driving lessons island wise and will introduce a book similar to the Highway Code. They said that the police will clamp down on people whom drink and drive. I%26#39;ve had a breathanalyser done twice and I was never over the limit at both times. The second time, I only had coffee. I%26#39;m happy that the police are randomly checking people for drinking and driving as well as road tax discs being out of date.

While the police are better, the Cypriot drives still have to learn how to be courteous. Sadly this is based on a cycle. You give someone away, they don%26#39;t say thanks. So you stop saying thanks to other people whom do give you away. And then the other people stop saying thank you.

We all need to be more courteous and just keep doing it.

A good and happy driver is what we need on the roads.

I will certainly carry on being polite on the road even if not returned. I really enjoy Cyprus and the people,I just wondered if it was not expected.

Unfortunatly bad driving is a global problem,I Have witnessed the sad outcome of this here and the effect it has on so many people.

There are drivers and there are Cypriot drivers!! Don%26#39;t take offence, just carry on with your good manners - they don%26#39;t mean to be rude, its just their way of driving.

Just got back from Cyprus %26amp; nearly got knocked over twice crossing the road at pelican crossings while the %26#39;green man%26#39; was on! Too many drivers using mobiles whilst trying to drive.

|||

certainly will carry on being polite. If we all go out of our way to do this it just might rub off.

I have a few trips to Cypus this year so I will do my best

Driving in Cyprus it not so bad. The highways are genrally quiet. Town are busier and it can get a little tense at times(horn blowing). No road rage in Cyprus, no violence, maybe the odd hand gesture.

The young tend to be impatient and like screeching tires but on the whole it%26#39;s ok.

Police are clamping down now, speeding, drink driving (even in the morning, so watch out), tickets for parking etc.

A few things I did or spotted today...

1) Some idiot illegally parked his silly Suzuki jeep on the pavement very close to St George%26#39;s private clinic. He got fined. Good!

2) Today I was being extremely generous. I let everyone turn onto the main roads I was on. If they didn%26#39;t acknowledge me, I deliberately looked at their faces and nodded at them or did the %26#39;wave%26#39; gesture at them and I drove off.

I think you just have to %26quot;go with the flow%26quot;. I always thank people in the UK but find increasingly they ignore you here!!! I find driving in Cyprus less stressful than the UK as the roads are quieter and quite hilarious at times.

I will never forget being up in the mountains in Cyprus and having a vehicle pass us towing what looked like an elderly lady in a wheelchair....I nearly had an accident from laughing!!
