Hi There
There is so much doom and gloom around, why do so many people like to add to it ?
We are going to Paphos for the first time in May, like most places times are hard and things have changed. I am sure Cyprus is coping like every other country, and not every Brit is fat and beer swilling !

Positive: Cyprus is doing very well. The lack of tourist property sales and a downturn in tourism has done little to affect our economy.
You are very welcome, enjoy your holiday.

Hi
I have been critical of the prices in Cyprus recently but i am sure its still wonderful to visit and can%26#39;t wait to go in June. I also agree with an earlier post that its your holiday, so who cares what you spend, just enjoy it.
Lecia - I do have to strongly disagre with your comments though. Tourism to dec 08 stayed almost the same as 07, both in numbers and spend according to the Cyprus Central Bank (51,4m in 2007 51,6m in 2008). However, your trade deficit increased disproportionatly to previous years, unemployment increased as of december 08 - a trend which is yet to be reported on again in 09, cyp general price index dropped dramatically in dec 08, Market capitalisation dropped hugely in Nov 08 and fiscal surplus dropped on 07%26#39;s figures. All indicators that the country is not making as much as it used to.
I am keen to hear why you feel that Cyprus is bucking the global economic downturn?

I am no economist, but unlike other European countries Cyprus has a positive attitude. The national media is genrally upbeat and this encourages confidence among the population.
Yes there has been an increase in unemployment but this is minor compared to the rest of Europe and it is mainly restricted to the tourist building sector. Commercial building is still going strong and sees no slowdown at present.
As a business owner I see little slowdown at present, I am however realistic and we may see a downturn in the future. Whatever happens we will remain positive and enjoy our lifes, after all we have come a very long way in a very short time.

Thanks for replying Lecia, its refreshing to hear of a country%26#39;s media being positive at the moment, everywhere you look in the uk it%26#39;s another doom and gloom story. Out of interest, what sort of business do you run? I manage a large natioanl recruitment business in te UK and hae always though how great it would be to set up in Cyprus. Do you have recruitment companies in Cyprus?

Sorry Leica - just realised i have spelt you name incorrectly, long day i think!
|||
That is the difference between Cypriots and the rest of the world. They don%26#39;t worry or if they do they don%26#39;t show it! They are positive thinking and just get on and enjoy their lives to the best of their ability. We could learn from them. Go on holiday and enjoy - you will feel refreshed by their attitude when you get home.

That%26#39;s why I love this forum leno1, you get to know the benefits and pitfalls of holidaying in Cyprus before you travel. At least with the information you have (negative or otherwise) you are forearmed to make the most of your holiday.
As for Brits being fat and beer swilling; each to their own is what I say. I don%26#39;t have any hang-ups about fat people and if they want to swill beer on holiday then that%26#39;s up to them. If they%26#39;re not bothering me then I will not be bothering them.
Have a lovely holiday in that Cypriot sunshine. At least some things in life are still free x

Hello pablo, not sure about agencies in Cyprus but it would certainly be worth exploring, alot of qualified people always looking for better prospects, and alot of companies looking for good people.
As for me, a few shops and foreign car franchise and we dabble a bit in magazines and import. All positive at the moment but as I said previously you never know what%26#39;s round the corner.
