Staying in Ayia Thekla without a car......?

Hi,

Me and three friends have hired a villa in Ayia Thekla (Oceania Villas... anybody know of them?) and we dont really want to hire a car, is this a bad choice? Do buses run regularly through Ayia Thekla? We understand that this is a quiet area and we dont mind walking but will need to buy groceries, find restaurants and will want to visit Golden Bay and Macronissos etc, are they walkable? Are there shops in Ayia Thekla?

Would appreciate any response as i cant find much information on the area!

Thanks in advance x

I went through Ayia Thekla last year and to be honest there didn%26#39;t appear to be anything there apart from villas. In fact there looks to be a golden opportunity for someone to open a shop or supermarket to service the villas. If you really like walking it is walkable to Ayia Napa but I don%26#39;t think you would want to do it twice a day. You don%26#39;t say what month you are going but if its high season then you certainly aren%26#39;t going to want to walk far in the heat. Taxis are expensive. If I were staying in that area I%26#39;d definitely be looking to hire a small car. There must be buses so hopefully someone else will pick up this thread and advise you. Be aware though Cyprus buses run on GMT time (Greek maybe time!!)

Hiya, we stayed at Ayia Thekla last June in a villa (Thekla Villas...ps highly recomended). Ayia Thekla is basically a housing estate, no shops, but the best beach we have found in Cyprus. We hired a car for the holiday. We were overlooking the main route to Ayia Napa and to be honest, I can%26#39;t remember seeing a public bus at all for the week. Macronissos is the next along the road and then onto Ayia Napa. Macronissos has a couple of restaurants you might be interested or not, one ...I can%26#39;t think of the name of our fav.It was THE best for food quality we have ever visited, it%26#39;s on a small strip of about 6, nothing to look at from the front. It has a small kids area to the left and has Asian /Oriental waiters and bird houses strewn inside. The food is very authentic Cypriot dishes...try the Chef spesh steak with Ouzo sauce. Car hire is about the same price as Uk but you%26#39;ll save a fortune by hiring for one day (maybe as a airport collection and doing your weekly shop in Paliminni) as shopping day-to-day in the mini-marts is VERY costly. You couldn%26#39;t comfortably walk to Ayia Napa and back and taxis are expensive but you could walk from Macronissos and we found it ok to taxi there, eat and then walk into the square (10mins)....it%26#39;s just the getting back bit. Hope you enjoy your holiday. Hopefully someone on the forum will help you out with up-to-date car hire and taxi charges.

Roughly how much is a taxi to Ayia Napa? Maybe we could go there for the day and pick up some shopping on the way back? Must be a supermarket there... right? :-S x

Jade - July is so hot you are not going to want to walk very far. When I say hot, as soon as the sun comes up in the morning the heat is intense and it stays that way and walking any distance is very tiring. Don%26#39;t be put off with Ayia Thekla - its a nice area - but seriously I would look into hiring a small car for convenience. Have a look at www.Economycarrentals.com. I%26#39;ve just got a good deal from them - even if you only hire for a few days you could get to one of the big supermarkets and get stocked up for your holiday. Not sure of accurate taxi prices but I would think it is going to be in the region of 20 euros return to Napa although if there are 3 of you sharing the cost you might not find that unreasonable.

Im assuming there are no car rental places in aiya thekla itself? We have already arranged to be picked up and returned to/from the airport. Would driving from the airport to ayia thekla be easy? Sorry for all the questions!

Driving is very easy in Cyprus Jade - same side of the road as the UK and the roads are well signposted. Speed limits are strict and if you do exceed them and are unfortunate enough to get stopped you will get an instant fine! Straightforward run from the airport. As you are not familiar with the road it will probably take you about 50 minutes to Ayia Thekla. I%26#39;m paying 259 euros for 2 week car hire picking up and returning to the airport. Considering you will pay approx 120 euros for return taxi from the airport for the additional 139 euros you get a car for two weeks. When you consider that works out approx 10 euros per day you will save a lot on taxi fares.
