Look for beaches with blue flags (if they do that sort of thing in occupied parts of a country), lifeguards at a beach and stick to shallow ends making sure that you can stand up. Do not venture to the deep ends. The currents are stronger there. That%26#39;s all really. You are sorted!

I would say do not snorkel if you are not strong swimmers.I would suggest if you do, make sure the area is sheltered and well inhabited. Currents around most of the coast of Cyprus can be dangerous if you go out of your depth.

I have to say that there are very little effects of current in Cyprus, this is due to the lack of tide compared to the UK, here (cyprus) there is around a half metre range! infact you will probably not notice any as a swimmer! The wind has a greater effect, so if you use a lilo or similar flotation device for support, be aware of your location compared to the land/beach. There are many beaches where you can snorkel right next to shore and rocks, try in your comfort zone initially and then go deeper as your confidence increases. Just be aware of swimming areas and other watercraft that may not see you. so please do not be put off having a go! As always with the sea, respect it and be aware of your ability and do not get over confident/ too tired to swim back to the shore/boat.
Enjoy your holiday!

Well that is new to me. When I was younger I was a beach guard at curium beach (I was 18 and needed a job). We had two deaths that summer both locals like me. The next summer signs were put up warning of the strong currents, they are still there today !
Saying that the sea is genrally safe if you can swim, otherwise be careful.

The sea is different every day. As I said, treat it with respect and be aware of your abilities. Dont get carried away initially. If there are lifeguards on duty, check with them first, a good idea! But give it a go and enjoy it!If you are still concerned you will probably find an organised trip, or a boat trip that offers snorkelling, if not find a local scuba dive centre and ask them, they will advise you on the best place to snorkel and may even offer a snorkelling course or a try dive!
Have fun!

Best advise I can give is ask a LOCAL.We genrally know the areas and until recently fed ourselves from the sea.

Don%26#39;t know where you%26#39;re staying but I would recommend you call in - or email - Amphora Dive Centre on Escape Beach and ask them for advice. They are really really nice guys and have been there for many years.
My other advice would be to buy or rent a couple of light buoyancy jackets especially if you are not strong swimmers as it will give you a little bit of extra confidence. Don%26#39;t worry too much, wearing fins gives you a lot more swimming power than you would have naturally. Stick close to shore (you need to be in shallow water for good snorkelling anyway) and you%26#39;ll be fine.
The biggest danger to avoid is actualy to avoid snorkelling in areas much used by jetskiiers of boats as they may not be able to see you clearly.
Have a great time
Allie
