1st time to Cyprus will we have enough cash?

Hi,

My boyfriend and I are going to Paphos on 17th June (cant wait!)

We are going self catering and have in mind about £1,200.00 to take with us.

We do like our beers but as we are self catering we are going to go to the supermarket and pick up some cheap alcohol there, stuff for breakfast and lunch.

As we are close to Tomb of the Kings etc we have planned on one excursion to the Troodos Mountains (spelling ?)to see the monastery.

Do the seasoned travellers to Cyprus think this is enough?

P.s Does anyone know how much a trip to the mountains would be and which firms are reputable as in my experience the tour operator is quite expensive?

Many thanks in advance,

Bex.

I%26#39;m assuming you are going for a fortnight Bex, in which case you will be fine. If you are going for a week you will be even better off.

I think we spent about £1700 or £1800 last year but we are a family of four and we eat out for at least one meal a day and have drinks in bars etc. plus two days at the water park (which costs an arm and a leg itself).

There are lots of places to eat and drink along the TOTK Road, some cheaper than others and you will get to know where the bargains are to be had.

There is a lovely restaurant right across from the Tombs called Karlina. They do a 3 course set menu and the food is really good quality.

Hi,

Thanks for that quick reply.

Yes we will be there for two weeks (ooops forgot to mention the most obvious bit!)

Hi Bex

I think £1200 will be fine.

We%26#39;ll be there on 16th May and we would normally take £1000 for the 2 of us for a fortnight which is usually more than enough (and we do similar things to you re meals etc) however this year we will be increasing it to £1200 due to the poor pound buying less Euros.

Sorry, cant help with the Troodos Mountains excursions though - not been there (yet).

Have a lovely time!

Hi Bex

I think you will be fine too. If you are intending to go to the supermarket it may be wise to go to Papantonious near the harbour as you will find this much cheaper than using an on site supermarket or a kiosk.

I would recommend booking the troodos mountains through an agent when you get to Cyprus rather than the tour operator, I think you will find it much cheaper and probably the same excursion. Make sure you take something to cover your legs and arms if you are going into Kykoss monastery otherwise you may be turned away.

Hope this helps and you have a fab time

Karen

We found everything ridiculously expensive last week.

You need a car to find a cheaper supermarket.

Self catering was a non starter due to silly prices -we swapped to half board within hours of arrival when all the shops were shut bar one which was too exepnsive and had no fresh food, only tins and packets.

If you do go self catering, take as much as you can with you eg washing up liquid, tea towels, salt, coffee, tea etc.

Also take plenty of sun lotions and toiletries.

£1200 will be enough money but you won%26#39;t get much for it!

Obviously I don%26#39;t know where you stayed Olivia but you do find that the gift shop/kiosk type places around the hotels are very expensive. They don%26#39;t stock very much and what they do have is exorbitant.

As has already been advised, find the main supermarket in town.

You can take the bus to Papantonious from the Tombs of the Kings Road, get stocked up on shopping and get a taxi back. You don%26#39;t need a car and you certainly don%26#39;t need to take everything but the kitchen sink with you.

In fact, I didn%26#39;t haul toiletries all the way there with us last year but bought them from Papantonious when I got there. I paid about the same that I would have paid at home for shampoo, soap, shower gel etc. However, I do usually find that sun creams are more expensive abroad (wherever you go), especially when you can stock up on 2 for 1 offers at Boots and Superdrug at home.

It is a real shame that first time visitors and long standing visitors alike are coming back and saying that they will not go again. I have heard it too many times already this year. People will only wear rose tinted glasses for so long until they decide that enough is enough.

I spent £1245 two years ago, that was for two of us two weeks self catering, which included a car for three days.

|||

I think you will find there is a big difference between last year%26#39;s prices and this year%26#39;s.

|||

It sounds like it Olivia. What a great pity. Hopefully though things will turn around and you may give it another try in future years.

I think should be enough , i went last year (family of four) self catering with about that sort of money and did fine, as to beer go in the shop just across the road from the video shop(not the shop to your right) and they did cheapish large bottled bear on sale , look for keo !!

or there is a big superstore in the harbour area near debenhams - do your shopping and then get a taxi back,

All ways get a price from the driver before you get in !!

If you are close to the tomb of the kings you will find plenty of places that do a 3 course deal - try karlina%26#39;s - almost across the road from t.o.t.k

Enjoy
