Tips for 1st timers to paphos

Hi, have booked to come over to paphos in 4 weeks (8-22 april) have booked a villa near peyia (villa baxes), car hire is all arranged as well, just after some general tips please for an enjoyable holiday. Best places to eat for local food and company, willing to drive a bit as I don%26#39;t drink, just want good local value for money food, best shops for groceries we tend to eat what the locals eat not too worried about british food, ie. meat, fish, salads, fruit and veg.

I have been reading this forum since last sept, am I right in thinking it%26#39;s best to bring english money to change to euro%26#39;s, whats the current exchange rate there at the moment, Will it be warm enough to swim by then, whats the average temp, are the shops closed for the easter weekend, I understand this is a week after the british easter weekend, and lastly is there anything you wouldn%26#39;t recomend us wasting our time or money on. our ages are 74(very active), 64, 46, 27, and 8. We like to sample the local way of life when on holiday not too interested in tourist areas other than the historical ones. Sorry for so many questions.

Thank you in advance.

Hi - cant help much with first part of your query but from Peyia you are handily placed for visiting Latchi and Polis (great scenery as you drive) - boats can be hired in Latchi harbour. The Troodos mountains is a good day trip, check weather before going as it is much cooler up there. Speaking personally the best sights are the museum and Roman mosaics - entrance is near the main car park in Paphos Harbour and the harbour is a lovely place to sit and have a drink after visiting the mosaics. Other than that the scenery is just the best (free) attraction. The spring flowers should be out whan you go and hopefully the sun will be shining although it will be cool at night. Places like Aphrodites Rock and Bath I am afraid are just that - a rock and water- didnt do much for us.

I am sure others who are familiar with the Coral Bay/Peyia area will chip in with advice.

If you don%26#39;t mind driving to get there I can recommend a lovely restaurant called Viklari (Last Castle) which is on the way to Lara Beach. They are open at lunchtime and they do a set barbecue lunch. There is a choice of chicken or pork (or a bit of both) and it is served with potatoes and salad. If you head towards Lara Beach you will see a sign for it on a little side road on the right hand side. The views from there are to die for and the food is fabulous.

Two things I would say aren%26#39;t worth the time, trouble or money are Adonis Waterfall and Aphrodites Baths.

Although Aphrodites Baths are free, it does take a while to drive there and there isn%26#39;t much to see when you get there. Adonis Waterfall is simply a shocking rip off.

Thanks ChrissyH

Polis, Latchi and Troodos are already on our list to do, great idea about the boat hire. I did wonder about the baths and rock, glad to hear others view on them, the museum and mosaics are also planned as is the tombs.

Thanks Karen1967

Read great reviews on viklari, so thats already on our list, plan on going to Lara beach anyway, is there any chance of seeing the turtles if so when%26#39;s the best time of the day to go, waterfall is now off the list, don%26#39;t mind driving at all and plan to get out and about as much as possible to see the real villages, also plan to go to the north if possible but understand we can%26#39;t take the car over,so will be looking into things to do and see there if you have any info will be much apprieciated.

The turtles hatch and are released into the sea in the summer so I doubt that there is much to see in the spring months.

As for Aphrodites Rock, if it is your first time in Cyprus I would recommend going if only for the photo opportunity. After all, it is one of the most famous images of Cyprus and it would be such a shame to say you haven%26#39;t seen it.

Kourion is a good day trip, also Kolossi castle whilst in the area. We usually have lunch in Pissouri while down that way, nice driving on the old road instead of the motorway.

Agree about Viklari, well worth the trip and a great view. Always a good idea to book any day of the week. Last year I don%26#39;t think they opened till Easter, not sure about this year.

Last year we had temps about 24 in the day at that time, not really warm enough to swim unless you%26#39;re really hardy.

Thanks Karen1967

Will definately be taking photos of the rock, thanks for info on turtles my little one wanted to see them.

Thanks Robbersdog

Have noted the places and will definately be adding them to my list

I would check that Viklari is open first - as it tends to open late and close early in the season. It wasn%26#39;t open last year when we were there, but I think that was the first week of April.

I recommend Latchi (lots of good places to eat and huge, quiet beaches), Polis ( lovely old town square, plus big supermarket - Papantonious good prices and local foods as well as staples), neo chorio (great picnic area in the woods if you go straight through neo chorio and carry on up into the akamas - there is a picnic area and circular route walks). Also from Peyia, visit Agios Georgios for the beach and harbour. If your 8 year old likes creepy crawlies, then a visit to Snake Georges is a must - it%26#39;s a little wildlife refuge for snakes, lizards and spiders on the main Coral Bay - Peyia road.

If you visit Latchi you might bump into me, i%26#39;m there from 12-19 April!

Can%26#39;t be certain and I will make some enquiries, but I did hear a rumour earlier in the year that Snake George has closed his sanctuary down.

Karen

You are quite correct, George closed the snake/reptile sanctuary on January 1st. He was due to relocate but the residents of Tala signed a petition saying that they didnt want his reptile farm in Tala.

Karen

Lyndlou, it seems that you have done quite a lot of research and have found a lot of the best places to visit, if you are hiring a car and like to eat local produce, jump in your car in an evening and head out to the local villages around Paphos, there are good tavernas in Tala, Peyia, Koloni, Mandria etc. The meals are nicer, all fresh locally produced foods and much cheaper too. I hope you enjoy the island as much as we do.
