Legal drinking age.

We will be visiting Cyprus in July/Aug with our 2 children aged 14 and 17. Will my daughter (17) be allowed to have a glass of wine with her meal, as I keep finding conflicting info on the legal drinking age in Cyprus. She is 18 a week after we return home and will be v upset if the age is 18 and strictly enforced! She won%26#39;t want to binge drink but would like a glass with her meal in the evenings.

Yes of course. With a responsible parent like yourself there will be no problem.

Hi,

Actual legal age to drink is 16.

Nobody will be upset if your daughter has wine with her meal or anything else.

If you all go to cafes or bars or clubs, she can consume alcohol without any problems.

If you all start acting like drunks, the police will have a problem.

BUt otherwise, have a wonderful holiday!

|||

Even i am suprised at this. I have just asked a policeman friend (Lania Police) he states it is 17. He said it is a grey area, and some tout it at 16.

The reason been is problems with Cypriots drinking is virtually nil, problems with tourists however is one of the major problems the Police have in the tourist season.

Thanks both of you. Have told my daughter the news and she is delighted! Rest assured we won%26#39;t be falling over drunk on the streets of Coral Bay/ Peyia, just enjoying a glass (or two)in the evenings with our meal. Can%26#39;t wait!!!!

I have been to nearly all the places in the Med more so in Italy they have a culture where they allow children to drink a glass of watered down wine for the meal. Being brought up with this the children grow up with the idea that it is part of their life, having a meal with a glass of wine and consequently do not abuse drinking.

This is a great way to educate the young and therefore stops the binge drinking that you find in the UK. I might be wrong but the continentals have in my mind have got it right

Spot on Kev. But you will find that these countries drink in moderation and the thought of getting drunk is never on their mind.

Not sure what has gone wrong elsewhere, or how to tackle the problem. In the end it is down to the individual and the respect they have for themselves and others around them.

When I lived out in Cyprus as a youngster (age 3 to 6) my parents always allowed us a little wine with our meals once I got to age 5/6. The mediterraneans are a lot more relaxed about the whole thing and as you say don%26#39;t seem to have the same problems with binge drinkers that we do here. I have also adopted this approach with my own kids in the house and hopefully it will pay dividends when they get older. As with Lesley and her kids they see a glass of wine as a nice way to enjoy a good meal....although they actually aren;t too keen on the taste so far...I%26#39;m sure that will change as they get older!!

Lesley - I%26#39;m not sure if I picked this up right but are you staying in Coral Bay / Peyia area? If so and you want some restaurant or other tips, I%26#39;d be glad to advise. We were there last August and be warned it was very hot and humid!!!

Hi minniefiona

Yes we are staying in an apt in Peyia.It%26#39;s called Salacia Gardens- I don%26#39;t know if you know of it. We%26#39;d love some up to date info on restaurants etc in the area. We visited Cyprus many years ago (about 20 yrs!) but stayed at the other end of the island (before it got to be the 18%26#39;s-30%26#39;s inplace!!!) We hired a car, but didn%26#39;t really get further west than Paphos harbour. I%26#39;ve heard that we will notice a big rise in prices in the restaurants now that the euro is so bad against our pound. Any info you can give will be v gratefully received. I%26#39;m starting to get excited now even though our hol is still a long way away. Can you recommend a good car hire firm?

Thanks Lesley

Hi Lesley

I have stayed in Peyia twice and in Coral Bay the other times including last year.

Hire Cars - I booked over the web. I used Car Hire 3000 who weren%26#39;t quite the cheapest but included lots of things in the price that are often charged as extras...e.g. two drivers, Colision damage waiver and excess waiver. Excess waiver is worth considering as the excesses seemed to be around 500 Euros which is way more than you would even consider accepting on your car in the UK. The car we got was a new shape Nissan micra (we were a family of four with kids 9 and 5). It had 10000 kms mileage and had aircon. The car actually was subcontracted and came from Budget. Now we paid for three weeks hire and it was around £370 sterling (if my memory serves me correctly). That was last summer July / Aug and when the euro was about 1.20 to the £. Incidently the price on line that I got from budget for the same class of car was nearer £600!!!! Shop around on the web. I couldn%26#39;t fault the service or the car I got from car hire 3000.

Restaurants - Peyia - Savvas Grill is down the bottom end of the village and serves grills and traditional cypriot food. If you come on the main road from Coral Bay to Peyia, just before you get into the heart of the village there is a police station on the left, then you come to a tight left hand turn. Take that turning and Savvas grill is down there on your right.

There are some other resturants in Peyia. We went to Vrisi Tavern which is on the mian drag and althought the Meze we had wasn;t bad, it wasn%26#39;t one of the better meals that we had during the holiday. It was fairly cheap though and probably walking distance for you.

Now in Coral Bay there are some good restaurants, all of which are on the mian drag -

Sea Elephant - Left had side towards the bottom on the Coral Bay strip. Nice international and cypriot food but quite pricey. We paid 75.40 Euros for main courses and desserts for 2 adults and two young kids. The price included 5 soft drinks, 2 pints of Keo and 1 Glass of wine. It%26#39;s it well worth the price because the food was excellent. Second time we went we had three courses and wine and the bill was just over 100Es!!

Palm Grove - Mainly Italian but also some local and international dishes (but nice for a change once in three weeks!!) - 66.70E Again four main courses, and four sweets, 4 soft drinks and a bottle of wine this time!!! Excellent italian food and in my opinion better than the other Italian at the other end of Coral Bay (Trattoria La Vigna)

Seriani - Basic, good food, no frills. 42.30 E Four mains and six soft drinks or on our second visit 3 adult meze, 1 kids main, 4 desserts, 1 bottle of wine and six soft drinks - 88.35 Euros.

Coral King is another good one at Coral Bay and Harmony Restaurant which is on the Tombs of the Kings road on the way into Paphos on the left hand side. I don%26#39;t have prices for these but they were about the same as the others. (The reason I can quote you the prices is because my daughter kept a lot of the receipts and she has them in her scrapbook - hence the accuracy!!!)

However, I have left the best til last because my all time favourite has to be Araouzos Tavern in the village of Kathikas which is about a 15 min drive on the road towards Polis, but well worth it. Authentic cyprito cuisine, superb service and hospitality and lovely surroundings. Here we had four starters, four main courses, 2 village salads (we were very hungry that day!!), 8 soft drinks and it came to 59.25 euros. Also we got grapes and cake on the house as a dessert. Would definately recommend it.

I won%26#39;t go on any more as I have a garden that needs tending too but I can give you specific details of prices. Just remember that these prices were when the Euro was 1.20 to the £ so when converting now its going to near enough the same price in £s.

Hope you enjoy it and anymore advice you require just let me know or send me a private request by email.

Fiona
