car hire -north/south cyprus

Can anyone give recent experiences of hire in the south and travelling north in Cyprus and the hire firms that allow this.

Any details of the cost involved in extra insurance at the time of hire or at the border would be appreciated.

last time i was there the situation was that you could not cross over with a hire car as the turkish side have a nasty habit of stealing them.

Get out of here ! Most will not allow you to do this. Some will and insurance is available at the crossing point. Never heard of any thefts or trouble with hire cars that do cross.

Petsas will allow you to take the car to the North, and you can also get the insurance with them to save doing it at the border. It is fully comprehensive BUT there is a sizeable excess on it(about 600 euros I think) The cost was about 30 euros for 7 days, if I remember rightly, and you can go as many times as you like within this time. You fill in a slip at the border and must be stamped in and out.

Also don%26#39;t forget your passports, don%26#39;t bother to try and bring much back eg cigs and fake designer stuff, as the Greek customs often search the cars.

A Turkish map is very useful as the place names are different to the Greek maps. You can use euros, but it is better to get some YTL from a cash machine while you are there as you will get a better deal.

Hope you have a good trip.

Another option (which we did some years ago), park your hire car at the border and walk through. Then hire a taxi for the day at the other side. Taxis (mercedes decent ones!) were waiting at the turkish side and we hired the guy for the day. It was reasonable then and I%26#39;m sure it would still be. We told him all the places we wanted to go and he was like our tour guide for the day. Saves a lot of time and effort if you don%26#39;t know your way around. He also seemed to be able to park for free whereever he went and even drove us literally straight onto the beach at one point!!

Many thanks for your useful info;will certainly try out your recommendation.
