Border Crossing and overnight stay

Holidaying in the north of Cyprus this summer.

We would like to walk across into the south, hire a car on the south side and then spend a day touring around the Troodos area, with an overnight stay. Then return back across the north the following day. Is this a problem? Don%26#39;t think it is but any advice appreciated.

Been to north and south many times so know the island very well. We are traveling with friends and this would be a great opportunity to show them a little more of the island.

Help appreciated

Hi PoshinDevon

I have taken a car from the south to the North without much problem and I have friends in the North who do the south run many times.

I have also walked through at Nicosia down Ledra St to the North side, this is were I am unsure if it is only a day pass your issued with, but I think I might be wrong. I am sure there are some on this site that will clarify this for you

I am not really sure what you are expecting to be a problem.

I have flown into Larnaca, travelled to the North by taxi or my friends from the North have collected me to visit them for a few days then returned to the South and hired a car before flying back home out of Larnaca.

I have also done it the other way around.

I haven%26#39;t encountered any kind of problem with hiring cars or crossing the border or stamps in passports or other such myths. The only thing I haven%26#39;t done is hire a car in either the North or the South and taken it over the border. I do believe this can be done but I haven%26#39;t done it myself.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Having lived in Cyprus for many years and holidays many times we have crossed the border numerous times. This holiday we fly to Larnaca, cross to the north and stay near Kyrenia.

We know the border is more open, we have walked across many times. This time we want to drive to Nicosia, walk across the border and then hire a car on the south and spend a day touring Troodos then overnight in south and return north the following day. We believe this is not a problem - but just want any advice from those who may have done this or live there. Hopefully no restrictions, i.e. we have to return same day.....if anyone can confirm it would be great.

Thanks

Again, it is not a problem.

I get the message...its not a problem.

Have lived on the island a few times over the years - a total of 12yrs on and off since 1970, so know many places to go and how to escape the tourists. Of course it has changed but fortunately can still find old places not spoilt. Last visit was in 2005 so a chance to spend a couple of days revisiting Troodos and the surrounding area will be great.

Still quiet up here, seem to see less and less tourists every year, which suprises me it is usually the other way round. Paphos and Akamas area seem to be the big draw for tourists.

Plenty of unspoilt areas still around, although you will find on the outskirts of villages they have built horrible tourist villas, which in the main are still laying empty.

Hi ...presume by up here you mean north cyprus?

Less and less tourists each year....maybe the credit crunch is impacting or maybe they just dont like the place. I have read about litter problems...but to be honest its a mediterranean thing....once you get off the highly regulated beach areas, there is always someone dumping their rubbish or left over bbq stuff.

There was a fair bit of building when we last visited and have no doubt much more, but we intend as normal to get away and off the beaten track.

Looking forward to it...

Thks for feedback...any other thoughts or ideas appreciated.

Sorry, I meant the mountain villages or to be more precise the one where I live and surrounding areas.
